NSAID Eye Drops

Effects

NSAIDs (ATC S01BC) have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibition of cyclooxygenase.

Indications

  • Pain and inflammation after cataract surgery.
  • Postoperative inflammation
  • Cystoid macular edema
  • Posttraumatic ocular inflammation, e.g., snow blindness.
  • Pain after surgery on the eye
  • Inhibition of miosis during surgical procedures.

Not all drugs are approved for all indications.

Active ingredients

  • Bromfenac (Yellox)
  • Diclofenac eye drops (Voltaren Ophtha, Dicloabak).
  • Indometacin eye drops (Indophtal)
  • Ketorolac (Acular)
  • Nepafenac (Nevanac)

Monodoses of some drugs are on sale without preservatives.

Contraindication

NSAID eye drops are contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or other NSAIDs. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.

Interactions

Interactions are possible with glucocorticoid eye drops. When used concomitantly, adverse effects on the cornea may be increased. Wound healing is delayed.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local ocular side effects such as burning, irritation, visual disturbances, redness, hypersensitivity reactions, photosensitivity, corneal inflammation, and corneal damage (e.g., corneal thinning, corneal erosion, epithelial damage, and perforation). Systemic side effects are rare.
