On the Slopes Without a Hangover

In addition to the active activity of winter skiing, long evenings, loud music, dancing as well as alcohol consumption at après ski are a special highlight for many winter sports enthusiasts to round off the daily skiing in cheerful company in huts, cafes or nightclubs.

First alcohol then skiing?

Mulled wine, Jagertee and hot cocoa with shot are as well as beer and various spirits welcome warmers in the immediate aftermath of the sporting skiing pleasure in the alpine sports in the mountains.

Prevent the “hangover”

What helps to get through the day fit and to avoid or alleviate an unwanted “hangover” on the following ski day? To keep your ski vacation enjoyable, we’ve put together some tips.

  • Breakfast is the best and, above all, necessary basis for a sporty day. Ideal is an oatmeal cereal with fruit as well as milk. Depending on your taste, sandwiches and cheese rolls/breads and vegetables are equally recommended. Drinking should not be forgotten either: Here, fruit juices and in moderation coffee and tea are suitable.
  • Instead of reaching for the chocolate bar in between, satisfy the small hunger rather with fruit, cereal bars or whole grain cookies.
  • At lunchtime at the ski lodge, the energy store must be replenished. Opt rather for light meals that contain many carbohydrates instead of the greasy fries. Optimal are pasta with tomato sauce or stews, such as pea / potato soups.
  • This also applies to the evening, when all energy reserves must be used up and refilled. The variation of carbohydrates, such as potatoes, rice or pasta, meat, fish, fresh salad, fruit and vegetables provide the best conditions for the athletic challenge the next day.
  • Even if it is cold outside, you still sweat during winter sports. And this fluid loss must be compensated accordingly. Make sure to take enough liquid to yourself. Mineral water, clear soups or fruit juice spritzers are best suited.
  • The temptation in the cold after Jagertee and mulled wine is great, but not recommended. Alcohol contains many superfluous calories and also inhibits the ability to react, which is not necessarily conducive to sports:
Drinks per serving Energy in kcal Amount of alcohol in g
Mulled wine (0,2 l)* 210 12,4
Jagertee (0,2 l)* 135 15,5
Beer (0,5 l) 210 19,8
Brandy (2 cl) 52 7,6
Egg liqueur (2 cl) 57 2,7

(Average data, as there is no uniform recipe).

The biggest risk: alcohol

It’s so tempting and can be so much fun – the apres-ski party. But beware: after a day of skiing, the body is exhausted and drained. All the better then works the alcohol and you feel with the first mulled wine abruptly fit and wide awake again. But appearances are deceptive. In the long run, alcohol tends to increase fatigue, weaken concentration and reduce coordination. Not a good prerequisite for the downhill run. By the way, most accidents on the slopes happen under the influence of alcohol. This is a risk that is best avoided to protect oneself, but also to protect others. In addition, the alcohol also makes itself felt the next day, and not necessarily positively.

Diet tips against hangover

  • One reason for the unpleasant feeling of a hangover is the large fluid deficit, since alcohol deprives the body of fluid. Against it one works with non-alcoholic beverages, like water and juice spritzers. It is best to start with it already directly in the evening.
  • Drink alcohol not against thirst, but for pleasure.
  • No alcohol on an empty stomach. High-fat meals can sometimes delay the absorption of alcohol into the blood.
  • If you drink alcohol, stick to one type if possible. This is better tolerated.
  • Sweet and warm alcoholic beverages, such as mulled wine, sparkling wine or Jagatee get into the blood faster. Since the gastric mucosa is better supplied with blood, which in turn accelerates the absorption.
  • Still a proven anti-hangover recipe for the morning after: The chicken soup.It is easy on the upset stomach and restores minerals and electrolytes to the body and compensates for the fluid deficit.
  • The best recipe against hangover is fresh air. Overcome the inner pig dog and grit your teeth. Get out of bed, off to the slopes – after a short time, the world looks better again.
