Pathogenesis (development of disease)
The cause of cellulite lies in the elastic structure of the connective tissue in women. The fat cells inflate there hormonally controlled by estrogens (female sex hormones) – depending on predisposition – increased and penetrate into the corium (dermis), which leads to unsightly dimples.
In men, cellulite hardly occurs because they have more testosterone. This male sex hormone ensures a firm hold of connective and fatty tissue and is therefore considered an anti-cellulite factor.
Etiology (Causes)
Biographic causes
- Genetic burden from parents, grandparents (in this case: genetic predisposition of connective tissue).
- Connective tissue insufficiency (connective tissue weakness).
Behavioral causes
- Nutrition
- Unbalanced diet (too high in fat).
- Fluid deficiency
- Too rapid weight gain and also loss
- Consumption of stimulants
- Tobacco (smoking)
- Physical activity
- Physical inactivity
- Overweight (BMI ≥ 25; obesity) – leads to increased connective tissue pressure and thus to impaired lymphatic drainage.
Medication
- Hormonal contraceptives (contraceptives).
Other causes
- Pregnancy
