Ornidazole

Products

Ornidazole is commercially available in the form of film-coated tablets and ampoules (Tiberal). It has been approved in many countries since 1980. Vaginal tablets for local treatment of trichomoniasis are out of commerce.

Structure and properties

Ornidazole (C7H10ClN3O3, Mr = 219.6 g/mol) is a nitroimidazole.

Effects

Ornidazole (ATC P01AB03, ATC J01XD03) has bactericidal and antiparasitic properties against protozoa.

Indications

Ornidazole is approved for the treatment of trichomoniasis, all forms of amebiasis, the treatment of lambliasis (giardiasis), and the treatment and prevention of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. Tablets taken as a single dose in the evening after meals or twice daily.

Contraindications

Ornidazole should not be used in hypersensitivity, CNS disorders, blood dyscrasias, or other blood count abnormalities. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.

Interactions

Ornidazole does not cause alcohol intolerance like other nitroimidazoles, eg, metronidazole. Interactions include those with vitamin K antagonists, vecuronium bromide, enzyme inducers, and enzyme inhibitors.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include indigestion, nausea, vomiting, metallic taste, dizziness, somnolence, bone marrow depression, neutropenia, hypersensitivity reactions, tremor, rigidity, incoordination, seizures, impaired consciousness, and peripheral neuropathy.
