Ovarian Cysts and Benign Overay Neoplasms: Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

Symptoms and complaints of ovarian cysts and benign neoplasms of the ovary (ovary) are uncommon, often atypical, and nonspecific, especially depending on the size of the tumor. It is estimated that > 50% of findings are found during routine examinations or only by ultrasound. The following symptoms and complaints may indicate ovarian cysts and other benign neoplasms of the ovary:

Pathognomonic (indicative of disease).

  • Ovarian fibroma
    • Meigs syndrome: ascites (abdominal dropsy), unilateral hydrothorax (“water-filled chest”)

Leading symptoms

  • Bleeding disorders, especially in functional cysts and retention cysts.
  • Cycle disorders, especially in functional cysts and retention cysts.
  • Androgen-forming tumors
    • Virilism
    • Secondary amenorrhea
  • Estrogen-producing tumors
    • Bleeding abnormalities (bleeding disorders).
    • Pseudopubertas praecox (a form of premature sexual development).

Associated symptoms

  • Acute abdomen (stem torsion, rupture).
  • Complaints/pain in:
    • Defecation (bowel movement)
    • Micturition (urination)
  • Pressure dolence (usually low) in the small pelvis.
  • Dysmenorrhea (period pain)
  • Dyspareunia (pain during intercourse)
  • Foreign body sensation in the small pelvis
  • Low back pain
  • Sharp pain in case of cyst rupture or stem rotation
  • Unclear abdominal pain
  • Feeling of fullness
  • Increase in the circumference of the body
