Diagnosis | Pain in the incisor

Diagnosis

Before the dentist takes a closer look at the aching tooth with his instruments, he will first ask the patient some questions about the accompanying circumstances. It is interesting to know how long the symptoms have existed, whether a certain event is related to it and whether it has occurred before. In case of trauma, a special accident form must be filled out to clarify certain claims.

Then the tooth is examined, a percussion and cold test is carried out. Finally, an x-ray is taken and the dentist starts the treatment. During a percussion test, each tooth is carefully tapped with the back end of the mouth mirror.

This light tapping should not cause pain in healthy teeth. In the case of the cold test, the tooth is checked for sensitivity to cold with the help of a cotton ball treated with ice spray. In the case of a healthy tooth this should trigger a slight pulling.

Therapy

If the incisor is painful, the correct diagnosis can only be made by the treating doctor. A therapy is carried out depending on the cause. In the following some therapy possibilities are listed: Therapy for caries/secondary caries: Depending on the size of the carious lesion, the caries can be removed, a filling can be placed in the cavity and if necessary a crown can be made.

If the defect already reaches the pulp, the dentist has to perform a root canal treatment. In the case of secondary caries, the old restoration is removed along with the caries and then a decision is made as to the whereabouts of the tooth.
