Pain under the right costal arch
Immediately below the costal arch on the right side, the lower edge of the liver and the gall bladder are located. A palpation of the costal arch is part of the doctor’s general examination. A bulging gall bladder can be palpated under the costal arch without much effort.
This is the case, for example, in the case of gallstones and inflammation of the gall bladder. The pain can be girdled along the right costal arch. The kidneys also lie approximately at the level of the costal arch in the rear upper abdomen. In the case of inflammation of the renal pelvis, the pain also occurs below the costal arch and can again pull forward like a belt.

Flank pain during pregnancy
Pain in the flanks and upper abdomen can occur more frequently in late pregnancy. This is primarily due to the ever-increasing uterus, which is growing upwards in the abdominal cavity. This mainly affects parts of the intestine, stomach and other upper abdominal organs, which react painfully to the pressure.
In addition to organs, the uterus can also hit and squeeze blood vessels and nerves. A dangerous complication can be the squeezing of the inferior vena cava by a supine position. In case of complaints, the pregnant woman should definitely have the causes clarified, since infectious diseases and other illnesses in a pregnancy can have different effects than in a non-pregnant person.
Pain after eating
If the flank pain always occurs in temporal dependence on food, a cause in the digestive tract is obvious. Colicky pain in the upper abdomen strongly indicates a bile stasis. Cramp-like pain, on the other hand, can often be localized in the stomach or small intestine. Harmless food intolerances, but also gastrointestinal infections and other diseases can be the cause here.
