Piriformis Syndrome
This is also a disease that occurs frequently in runners. Here too, the cause can lie in a bad posture, but also in a corresponding anatomical condition. The musculus piriformis is a muscle that starts in the pelvic area and moves towards the head of the thigh.
If the muscle is thickened or rearranged due to incorrect posture, the sciatic nerve may be pressed by this muscle. This results in pulling pain, which mostly pulls into the corresponding leg and sometimes results in a severe impairment of movement. This piriformis syndrome can also occur after long periods of sitting, when a constant forward bent position is adopted.
There are numerous other diseases that cause similar symptoms. For this reason, one should always rule out other diseases before diagnosing Piriformis Syndrome. This is also due to the fact that the treatments differ accordingly.
Piriformis Syndrome is also initially treated by pausing the exercise that led to the condition. In addition, there are numerous stretching and extension exercises for the piriformis muscle, which reduce the pressure on the sciatic nerve and thus alleviate the symptoms. The exercises must be started carefully and increased slowly.
Regularity can lead to a successful result. It may also be necessary to treat the pain with medication. If there is no improvement in spite of this, an imaging of the spine should be performed in any case to exclude corresponding constrictions in the area of the spinal cord.

Summary
Under the umbrella term of running disease, symptoms are summarized that can either consist of a narrowing of the legs and the corresponding strain on muscles and tendons. In tibial edge syndrome, there is an irritation of the starting points of the calf muscles, which can occur especially during long runs. In piriformis syndrome, there is a thickening of the piriformis muscle, which extends from the hip to the head of the thigh and is involved in leg movement.
The muscle can press on the sciatic nerve due to its thickening and thus lead to corresponding pain. Pain that moves into the leg is most likely to be described. For all symptoms of the running disease, the triggering sport should first be paused and a longer rest period should be taken. In addition, stretching exercises can be performed to relieve the strain. Incorrect strains should also be reduced and running shoes should be checked.
