Pomelo: Mix of Grapefruit and Pomelo

In addition to kiwis, pineapples, lemons, oranges and papayas, the fruit counters in Germany have been richer for several years with the pomelo an exotic fruit. The pomelo, which only originated in Israel in 1970, is a cross between the grapefruit and the pomelo. All three fruits belong to the citrus group. The pomelo is a fruit beneficial to health, containing many vitamins but few calories. However, when eating the pomelo, it should be noted that interactions may occur when taking certain medications.

Since the pomelo has hardly any calories, it is perfect for a healthy snack. Depending on how sweet the exotic fruit is, 100 grams of pomelo have between 25 and 50 calories (kcal).

In terms of nutritional value, the high vitamin C content is particularly noteworthy: A pomelo contains about 41 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams. It also contains large amounts of potassium, magnesium and phosphate.

Another positive aspect is the high content of the bitter substance limonin, which stimulates intestinal activity.

In the supermarket, the pomelo is usually easy to recognize by the fact that it is packed in a net. The exotic fruit has a pear-like shape and weighs between half a kilogram and two kilograms. Its diameter can be up to 25 centimeters.

The skin of the pomelo is light yellow to greenish and very thick. In October, when the pomelo season begins, there are also pink fruits, they mostly come from Israel. Other main cultivation areas of the pomelo are South Africa, Southeast Asia and China. From China, mainly the so-called “Honey Pomelos” are imported.

How to eat a pomelo?

Before eating, the peel of pomelo must be removed as well as the white skin inside the fruit. To peel pomelo, it is best to proceed as you would with an orange.

If the pomelo is ripe, the flesh inside tastes sweet, otherwise it may also have a slightly sour taste. Whether the pomelo tastes sweet or rather sour can be revealed by looking at the peel: If it is slightly shriveled, the fruit tastes honey-sweet.

Once the pomelo has been peeled, the fruit can be eaten raw: It is well suited for fruit salads or also for the morning muesli. Likewise, they can be made into juice or spreads. If you like it more exotic, you can also conjure up a pomelo salad, as it is often offered in Asian cuisine.

Be careful with antihypertensive medications

Similar to grapefruit, pomelo is also warned against interactions with certain medications. However, many people are unaware that eating pomelos can have undesirable consequences. The ingredients of the pomelo include the bitter substance naringin, which is converted to naringenin in the body.

In combination with other ingredients, naringenin has a blood pressure-lowering effect. So if you have slightly elevated blood pressure, eating a pomelo will initially have a positive effect. In combination with antihypertensive drugs, however, the fruity snack can cause considerable problems, as it can lead to a sharp drop in blood pressure. For this reason, pomelos and grapefruits should not be eaten, or only in small quantities, if the corresponding medication is being taken.

The breakdown products of naringin cause a certain enzyme in the liver to be blocked in the body. Therefore, some drugs are broken down more slowly than usual in the body. This can lead to increased effects or side effects of these drugs. Anyone who enjoys eating pomelos should check with a doctor about possible side effects before taking any medication.
