Procedure
How an endoscopy is performed depends entirely on the location of the examination (i.e., the location of the endoscope).B. gastrointestinal tract, lungs/bronchia, nasal cavity, knee joint, etc.) If the endoscope is introduced via the mouth, care should be taken in advance to remove dentures and piercings in the oral area.
If an examination of the gastrointestinal tract is performed, the patient must come to the examination appointment on an empty stomach and the intestine should be completely emptied. The endoscopy is performed either under a short sedation (mostly) or under general anesthesia (only in some cases). The endoscope is then inserted into the body through the natural orifices of the body (mouth, nose, anus, etc.)
or through a small skin incision (e.g. during knee arthroscopy, laparoscopy, etc.). As a rule, the patient is not aware of the examination itself. The physician now has the possibility to “only” examine the corresponding organ or body cavity during the endoscopy, but he can also take tissue samples and perform treatment using special tools.
