It is not possible to give an exact time estimate for the duration of the injury. This is due to the fact, for example, that a stretch can sometimes be stronger and sometimes weaker. In addition, there are strong individual differences in the healing phase, for example, due to the different physical conditions of those affected.

For example, a healthy 20-year-old recovers from an inner ligament stretching faster than a sick 80-year-old. As a rule of thumb, the healing of an inner ligament strain takes between 4 and 6 weeks. At the latest when symptoms persist significantly longer, a doctor should be consulted to rule out a more serious injury, such as a torn or torn ligament.

After an extension of the inner ligament, the knee should not be put under heavy strain for about 6 weeks. This time should be sufficient for regeneration. Of course there are individual differences.

Some are fit again after 4 weeks after a stretching, others need 8 weeks. Therefore you should listen to your body and not do any sports as long as the movements cause pain in the knee. Ignoring these warning signs can lead to more serious injuries, such as a torn ligament.

A training of the upper body, for example in the gym, is possible without hesitation. Physiotherapy is also a suitable means of getting back on your feet more quickly. If the pain and swelling in the knee still has not subsided after 6 weeks despite a break from sport, a doctor should be consulted to rule out more serious injuries.

A stretching of the inner ligament is not necessarily a reason for sick leave. In professions where the patient sits a lot and does not strain the knee, such as in the office, a sick note is not necessary. If the pain is very severe, a few days are sufficient in this case until the pain subsides somewhat.If a patient has to walk or stand a lot during working hours, a sick leave of 1-2 weeks is justified.

Even in this situation, it is advisable to wait until the patient is able to work as painlessly as possible. Possible occupational groups would be sales staff or couriers. For professional athletes, a longer sick leave should be considered, since a too early loading of the inner ligament of the knee can lead to severe secondary injuries.

The healing of the stretch can take up to 8 weeks. During this time the athlete should take care of his knee.
