Prognosis of a liver abscess

The mortality rate for multiple liver abscesses is 30%. As a complication there is a risk of septic spread of the pathogens of the abscess (parasite or bacteria) in case of perforation of the abscess. In addition, impairment of liver function with potentially life-threatening consequences.

Streptococci

In most cases bacteria are responsible for the liver abscess. The most common pathogens are the Ekolibakterium (Eschericha coli) and the Klebsiellen.These live naturally in the intestine. Streptococci are less frequently identified as the pathogen of a liver abscess. They occur naturally in the mouth.
