Proper Medication Intake: Common Mistakes

More details on medication use and what is meant by it:

Arrangement This is what is meant
“on an empty stomach” 30 – 60 minutes before the meal or at the earliest 2 hours after the meal
“before meal” approx. 30 – 60 minutes before the meal
“after meal” approx. 30 – 60 minutes after the meal
“with the meal” during the meal
“1 x daily” e.g. in the morning
“2 x daily” @ e.g. in the morning and in the evening
“3 x daily” e.g.morning, noon and evening
e.g. in the morning, at noon, in the evening and at night
“at night” before going to bed
Tip: Unless otherwise directed by your doctor or pharmacist, it is a good idea to combine medications with your usual meal times to ensure regular intake.

If you forget to take a dose, do not take a double dose on the next intake date! Instead, read the package insert to find out what to do in such a case, or if in doubt, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Adherence to therapy is important

However, if you do not complete the therapy, the infection can flare up again more intensely because the pathogens spread again. Even if the symptoms often disappear after the first few days of treatment, the immune system is still fighting the pathogens. In addition, antibiotic resistance can develop if therapy is discontinued, so that the drug may no longer help at all in the treatment required later.

Food with influence

As a rule, the active ingredients of a drug enter the body more quickly if they are taken on an empty (empty) stomach. In this way, the effect also sets in more quickly.

Drug-food interactions also occur with oxalic acid-rich foods such as rhubarb, spinach, Swiss chard, or beet and protein-rich foods.

Proper liquid

As a rule, you should take tablets with sufficient liquid so that they are easier to swallow and do not stick in the esophagus. A full glass of water is a good guideline.

Caution sun

Study the package insert!

Before starting to take any medication, you should always read the package insert. There you will find a lot of information including warnings and all known side effects. However, do not let this put you off! Ask your doctor or pharmacist if anything is unclear to you.
