The diagnosis | The conjunctival cyst

The diagnosis

The diagnosis of a conjunctival system can be made by a so-called gaze diagnosis. When examining the eye, the ophthalmologist can clearly see the swelling on the conjunctiva from the outside. Due to its clear structure, this examination is often sufficient to make a diagnosis of a conjunctival cyst.

However, if further clarification is necessary, the cyst can be punctured, i.e. punctured. The liquid material obtained can then be examined more closely. If the fluid is tear fluid, a conjunctival cyst can be assumed. If there is still doubt about the diagnosis, the tissue forming the cyst can also be examined. On microscopic examination of the cells, a conjunctiva-like structure will be noticeable.

The treatment

Since the conjunctival cyst is a benign mass, no therapy is usually necessary. Treatment of the conjunctival cyst only takes place if the cyst is very troublesome. A frequent reason for treatment is a strong foreign body sensation.

Restrictions in the movement of the eye, which consequently lead to restrictions of the visual field, can also be an indication for therapy. In most cases, however, the cyst is only treated if it is located in the path of the incident light. This is the case if the cyst lies directly in front of the pupil.

The therapy of the conjunctival cyst consists first of all of a puncture. This involves puncturing the cyst so that the fluid can drain away. The individual wall layers of the different type of conjunctiva remain intact, as they often lie against each other and form an inconspicuous conjunctiva.

If the cyst subsequently reoccurs, further surgery may be necessary. The new cyst can be removed, for example, with the help of a laser or a minimally invasive procedure. However, surgical procedures can also be used.

Furthermore, the excess connective tissue can be removed with cold. Especially if the connective tissue cyst is located in front of the pupil, a gentle procedure must be chosen to avoid other damages in the area of vision. In ophthalmology, the principle of laser treatment is used for various diseases.

Thus, laser procedures can be used to reach different parts of the eye. In the case of the conjunctival cyst, the laser must treat the anterior segment of the eye. Nowadays, lasers can be adjusted to their target with micrometer precision, so that they can treat areas of the eye previously defined on the computer and the rest of the organ is spared. The laser beam is used to remove excess conjunctival material from the cyst, leaving a smooth conjunctival layer on the surface. The fluid can be drained from the conjunctival cyst beforehand by means of a puncture; occasionally the fluid is drained from the cyst only during the laser procedure itself.
