Prophylaxis | Bursitis of the knee

Prophylaxis

After the bursitis of the knee has healed, it is recommended to do regular stretching and strength exercises to strengthen the muscles. The knee joint is thereby additionally protected and stabilized. In the case of repetitive one-sided activities during work, sports or leisure time, breaks should be taken to relieve the strain and, if necessary, the knee under load should be alternated.

This enables the tissue to recover from the load. Particularly during sports activities, you should make sure that running shoes are easy on the joints and that the movement sequences are carried out correctly. When working with increased stress on the knee joint, such as tilers do, it is advisable to cushion the knee against the hard surface. A cushion as a carpet pad, knee pads or orthopedic protective bandages can be considered here as aids.

Which doctor treats bursitis?

In theory, any doctor can diagnose and treat bursitis. Therefore, it does not matter whether the affected person primarily consults a general practitioner or an orthopaedist. In the case of recurrent bursitis, however, the cause of the recurrent disease pattern should be looked at more closely.

If overuse is the cause, a general practitioner can treat the bursitis without referral to a specialist. If joint degeneration is a definite cause, an orthopedic surgeon can provide better information about possible treatment options. Therefore, it is usually necessary for the family doctor to refer the affected person to a specialist in the individual case.
