Prophylaxis | Treatment of nail bed inflammation

Prophylaxis

In general, one should simply make sure that both fingernails and toenails are well treated, which means that they should be regularly treated with creams or ointments, that appropriate protection is provided in case of stress, or simply that one wears suitable shoes so that no pressure points can develop (nail bed inflammation treatment). To prevent nail bed inflammation, one should be very careful, especially during manicure and pedicure, so as not to damage the nail and the surrounding skin. The cuticle should never be removed and the use of nail polish also promotes the development of an infection, so it should be used as rarely as possible.

Furthermore, contact with irritating cleaning agents should be avoided as far as possible. If this is not possible, one should pay attention to appropriate protective clothing such as plastic gloves with fabric inside, which offer the skin the important moisture protection. In addition, there is also the option of strengthening the nails in general with food rich in silicic acid (silicic acid is contained in high concentrations in millet, wholemeal rice, oat flakes or bananas, among other things).

In patients with wound healing disorders, diabetes or a weakened immune system, it is advisable to monitor even minor injuries and minor signs of inflammation very carefully, as infections have a more serious effect on them than on healthy people (nail bed inflammation treatment). For patients who are susceptible to nail bed inflammation, it is important to prevent effectively. This includes especially patients who have diabetes mellitus or other blood circulation problems.

For these patients, in addition to thorough hygiene, it is usually a matter of course to regularly apply nourishing, moisturizing ointments to their toes and fingers. In particularly serious cases, disinfectant ointments can also be applied regularly to minimize the risk of infection. An ointment containing cortisone is only suitable in the rarest of cases, and should only be used when all other methods have been exhausted due to a variety of side effects.
