Prophylaxis | Zygomatic fracture

Prophylaxis

The development of a zygomatic arch fracture can only be prevented in very few cases. Special helmets that protect the zygomatic region do not exist so far. For this reason, the prophylaxis (prevention) of a zygomatic arch fracture is very difficult. However, athletes who have recently suffered a zygomatic fracture are recommended to wear a special face mask during sports activities.

How can a mask help?

In the case of a zygomatic fracture, wearing a carbon face mask can protect the facial skull from further injury. Especially for vulnerable persons such as soccer players, the zygomatic bone can be protected until the fracture has healed completely. For athletes who would like to resume their sports as soon as possible after a zygomatic bone fracture, a mask can be very helpful.

However, it is absolutely necessary to consult the treating doctor. Only when the fracture edges have at least begun to heal and the swelling has subsided, can training with a carbon mask be resumed. However, the mask does not serve the actual healing process.

For this, physical protection is primarily necessary. For both professional and amateur athletes, it is medically recommended to let the fracture heal completely before resuming training or playing.
