Prostatitis (Prostate Inflammation): Therapy

General measures

  • Observance of the general hygiene measures!
  • In the case of abacterial prostatitis, that is, no bacteria can be detected as the cause, an active sexual life is recommended.
  • Nicotine restriction (refrain from tobacco use).
  • Limited alcohol consumption (max. 25 g alcohol per day).
  • Avoidance of psychosocial stress:
    • Mental conflicts
    • Stress

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • A total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit daily (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grain products).
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
    • In chronic prostatitis should avoid spicy foods as well as spices, such as chili.
  • Selection of appropriate foods based on the nutritional analysis.

Physical therapy (including physiotherapy)

  • Heat applications (hot water bottle; hot sitz bath) are recommended for abacterial prostatitis

Psychotherapy

  • If prostatodynia is present, that is, no physical or infectious causes for the complaints can be determined, psychological care should be provided to uncover any existing psychological causes, such as problems in the partnership or sexuality, and thus targeted psychological treatment.
