Clostebol

Products

No medicines containing clostebol are approved in many countries. Products available in some countries – for example, Italy and Brazil – include Trofodermin cream, a fixed combination with the antibiotic neomycin.

Structure and properties

Clostebol (C19H27ClO2, Mr = 322.9 g/mol) is a derivative of the male sex hormone testosterone chlorinated at position 4. Trofodermine contains the acetylated clostebol acetate.

Effects

Clostebol has anabolic, androgenic, and wound-healing properties. It promotes endogenous protein synthesis.

Indications

For the treatment of skin conditions such as erosions, wounds, intertrigo and injuries.

Dosage

According to the professional information.

Abuse

Clostebol can be abused as a doping agent and for bodybuilding, for example by being injected intramuscularly. Its use is prohibited both during and outside sporting competitions. Norwegian cross-country skier Therese Johaug tested positive for Clostebol in September 2016. However, there was apparently an oversight. The team doctor bought Trofodermin in Livigno, Italy, during a training camp to treat a sunburn on her lips. When Johaug was tested, clostebol, which was presumably absorbed through the skin and partially ingested perorally, was detected.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local skin reactions. When used systemically, the side effects of anabolic steroids should be expected.
