Rehabilitation

Complete removal leads to immediate recovery. Incompletely removed fibroadenomas have a tendency to re-grow (recurrence tendency). The best prophylaxis is the self-examination of the woman.

This should be done at least once a month, regardless of age. The best time for this is one week after the start of menstruation, because the breast is particularly soft then. For women who are taking a hormone preparation such as the pill, the best time is one week after the start of a new monthly pack.

In addition, women should have their breasts examined by a gynaecologist once a year from the age of 30 at the latest. The costs for this preventive examination are covered by health insurance companies from the age of 30 onwards. Female patients with a fibroadenoma do not have an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The fibroadenoma itself usually does not degenerate and remains benign.

Important Conclusion

The discovery of a lump in the breast is considered malignant until proven otherwise and requires medical clarification. In contrast to mammary carcinoma (breast cancer), fibroadenomas are usually benign and can be easily removed by surgery. It is therefore important that the woman undergoes a monthly self-examination and, if a change in the breast is discovered, immediately visits the gynecologist!
