Rotavirus Infection: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by rotavirus infection:

Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (E00-E90).

Mouth, esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

  • Ileus (intestinal obstruction) due to intussusception/invagination of a portion of the intestine into the aborally following intestinal segment (e.g., small intestine into large intestine) (risk of intussusception in infants >3 months of age without vaccination: 1 in 1,629 infants; incidence: 60-100 cases per 100,000 infants within the first year of life)

Psyche – Nervous System (F00-F99; G00-G99).

  • Epilepsy (seizures) in children and infants.
  • Mild encephalopathy with reversible lesion in the splenium (MERS) – an encephalopathy confined to the posterior end (splenium) of the bar (disorder of brain function that develops as a result of rotavirus infection)
