School of vision

Definition School of vision

The term “school of vision” is used to describe facilities at clinics or in ophthalmological practices where orthoptists work together with ophthalmologists to treat eye movement disorders such as strabismus and eye tremor, impaired vision and all diseases affecting the eyes. Today, the term “school of vision” is rather outdated, since early detection and new therapeutic methods often make it possible to avoid the costly training treatment of patients, which used to be the orthoptist’s main activity. Both children and adults suffering from strabismus come to the school of vision.

The orthoptist ensures that the examination and treatment is appropriate for the patient. Especially the examination of small children requires a high degree of patience and empathy, for which time is often lacking in the rather hectic daily routine of a doctor’s practice. In large eye clinics, there is therefore a “strabismus outpatient/”school of vision”, which carries the entire diagnostics of the disease of strabismus and, due to this delimited treatment area, has fewer patients, so that more time can be available for the individual patients.

In addition, the vision school department of larger eye clinics is also particularly specialized in the treatment of a child’s lens opacity (cataract) and an artificial lens can be inserted at an early stage and the child’s vision can be stabilized.
