Sciatica Syndrome: Therapy and Prognosis

The treatment methods are not only diverse, but are also evaluated differently in some cases. It is undisputed, however, that affected persons need patience. The healing process usually takes several weeks to months, despite supportive measures.

Treatment methods

  • A number of medications are available to relieve pain (analgesics), inhibit nerve inflammation (anti-inflammatories, corticosteroids), and relax muscles (muscle relaxants); in addition, local injections to the nerve root are used to numb and reduce inflammation.
  • Concomitant applications: Elevation of the legs bent at the hips and knees (stepped bed) is often recommended. However, it is now known that the immobilization for relaxation should be replaced as soon as possible by light exercise. Whether heat or cold applications do good, is individually different.
  • Physiotherapy, chiropractic therapy: these are usually used after the acute symptoms have subsided. The aim of physiotherapy in particular is not only to alleviate the symptoms, but above all to learn strategies to prevent further attacks in the long term (muscle building, back school).
  • Surgery: especially with this therapy option, the spirits divide. The tendency today is that surgery is performed either in acute nerve crushing or if the symptoms do not improve or worsen after several weeks of conservative treatment. In addition to general surgical risks, however, an operation always carries the risk of scarring, which can aggravate the symptoms.

What must the sufferer pay attention to?

The individual approach must be agreed with the attending physician. It is important to take the prescribed medication regularly and thus control the pain, instead of waiting until you can not stand it at all (this only worsens the symptoms unnecessarily).

Normal activities are conducive to healing, resting for days on end is rather counterproductive. Small setbacks are normal and should not discourage you. However, if the symptoms intensify continuously or if there is no improvement at all, another visit to the doctor is advisable.

What is the course and prognosis?

Most sciatica syndromes heal after a few weeks without residual symptoms, and only a few sufferers have relapses or require surgery. It is helpful to adjust lifestyle and to pay attention to back-friendly behavior. Many health insurance companies offer appropriate training programs; the attending physician or therapist can also often provide contact addresses.
