Side effect
In the case of preparations containing moderate concentrations of herbal incense extracts, the expected side effects are very low or their occurrence very unlikely. In rare cases, allergic reactions to incense may occur. These can occur in different ways depending on the use of the incense preparation: when used externally, they usually manifest themselves as itching; gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhoea, a feeling of fullness or nausea are – although rare – typical side effects when used internally.
When should incense not be used?
As a low-dose, herbal medicine, incense has no noteworthy interactions with other medicines and no counter-signs. It is nevertheless recommended to consult the treating physician before taking it during pregnancy and lactation. Since the contained and for the effect of the incense responsible Boswellia acids cannot be taken up however, as already mentioned, well over the stomach intestine tract and with the preparations available in Germany therefore no considerable, chemically provable blood mirror of these substances is present, the income of incense is in principle harmless.
Dosage of incense
The dosage of preparations containing incense depends largely on the type and severity of the symptoms. The form of application also plays a major role in the dosage. As a rule of thumb one can remember: Three times a day, one or two tablets or capsules should be taken at regular intervals for the beginning. For higher doses of tablets or capsules of more than one gram, only one tablet or capsule per day should be taken at first. If a massage with incense oil or ointment is used, this should be done no more than once a day to avoid overloading the tissue. An inhalation with incense oil and hot water should first be carried out once a day and can then be increased to two to three times a day if necessary or if there are severe symptoms.
Price of incense
The price of incense preparations depends mainly on the concentration contained in the medicine. Preparations with moderate concentrations are usually available for between 10 and 20 euros for 100 capsules. Higher concentrations, which can provide for a biochemically and pharmacologically provable mirror of the medically relevant Boswellia acids, are not certified against it in Germany. For ointments and creams with frankincense extract, between 10 and 20 euros for 100 mL can also be expected.
