Spinal canal stenosis in the lumbar spine – conservative treatment without surgery

Spinal canal stenosis means that the bony canal, in which the nerve fibers of the spinal cord run in the direction of the legs, is constricted and the contained structures are therefore exposed to increased punctual pressure. This can lead to back pain, which can radiate into the legs, and to a diffuse feeling of heaviness in the legs.

Contents of the treatment

  • In the conservative therapy of spinal canal stenosis, several therapy approaches in physiotherapy and physical therapy are combined with outpatient drug therapy for the best possible treatment success.
  • In physiotherapy, the focus is on stabilizing the movement segments of the spinal column in order to avoid shearing movements and to correct the frequently occurring hyperextension of the lumbar spine, hyperlordosis. For this purpose, exercises to strengthen the back and abdominal muscles are performed during therapy and an exercise program for home use is developed. In the case of spinal canal stenosis, this should be carried out conscientiously at least 3 times a week in addition to physiotherapy in order to achieve long-term pain relief.
  • Also mobilizing exercises for BWS and the shoulder and hip joints are part of the therapy, since the mobility of the surrounding joints can have a great influence on the statics and dynamics of the lumbar spine.

In addition, sports such as yoga, Pilates or supervised strength training on machines can be recommended in leisure time. passive measures can be used to supplement physiotherapy, which have a pain-relieving and muscle-relaxing effect. These include, for example, electrotherapy with a TENS device and conventional electrotherapy with muscle-relaxing alternating current. Also heat therapy, for example with fango packs, ultrasound therapy or massages can alleviate the symptoms of spinal stenosis.

  • In addition, special orthoses can be prescribed to stabilize the lumbar spine and slightly compensate for the lordosis to widen the spinal canal.
