Syphilis: Diagnostic Tests

Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics, and obligatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification and in the case of secondary disease

  • Abdominal sonography (ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs) – to exclude concomitant diseases.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG; recording of the electrical activity of the heart muscle) – if cardiac involvement is suspected.
  • Echocardiography (echo; cardiac ultrasound) – if cardiac involvement is suspected.
  • Computed tomography of the skull (cranial CT, cranial CT or cCT) – if neurosyphilis (involvement of the central nervous system) is suspected.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging of the skull (cranial MRI, cranial MRI or cMRI) – if neurosyphilis is suspected.
