Therapy
Treatment for pain during sexual intercourse depends largely on the underlying disease. Bacterial infections of the male or female reproductive organs must usually be treated with a so-called broad-spectrum antibiotic. These are antibiotics that are directed against a variety of bacterial pathogens that may be responsible for the pain.
Only after the responsible pathogen has been determined can a special, more effective antibiotic be prescribed.Inflammation of the external genital organs can be treated in both affected women and men by taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. Diclofenac). Patients must be aware that the treatment must be continued even after the symptoms have subsided completely. The attending specialist usually clarifies over which period of time the medication must be taken.
In addition, bacterial pathogens that cause pain during intercourse can infect both men and women. For this reason, even if one partner shows no symptoms, both should be examined and treated if necessary. In women Endometriosis does not always have to be treated.
However, if the affected patients experience pain during intercourse, appropriate therapy should be initiated. In general, endometriosis can be treated surgically or non-surgically (with medication). Myomas that cause pain during intercourse must also usually be treated promptly.
The benign tumor can be peeled out (so-called enucleation) or surgically removed. Depending on the extent of the tumor, it may be necessary to remove the uterus. However, in young women who suffer from myoma-related pain, an attempt is made to preserve the uterus and thus fertility.
In men, if the pain during sexual intercourse is caused by a narrowing of the foreskin, it must either be dilated or removed. In the case of a slightly pronounced narrowing of the foreskin, ointments or creams containing cortisone can help to alleviate the pain in the long term. However, pronounced forms of foreskin constriction usually require surgical treatment.
In the case of an inflammation of the glans, which leads to pain during intercourse, the treatment depends largely on the underlying cause. In most cases, disinfectant chamomile baths and antiseptic solutions can help to contain the inflammatory processes.
