Therapy | Mouth rot in the baby

Therapy

In addition to the home remedies against oral thrush described below, medication can also be prescribed by a doctor. This is especially necessary for very young babies, as otherwise the disease can spread to the eyes or even to the brain. Basically, the therapy begins with a treatment of the symptoms.

An attempt is made to lower the fever and at the same time to relieve the pain. Paracetamol works very well here, as it combines both effects. The pain can be relieved locally with various gels and creams.

These contain a surface anaesthetic and numb the tongue, palate and cheek superficially. There are also sprays containing the drug chlorhexidine. This has a disinfecting effect and can thus kill viruses and other bacteria. In the case of very severe cases, an antivirus agent is used.

This is Aciclovir, which promotes the acceleration of healing. Since all homeopathic remedies need some time to take effect, the administration of the remedies should be started early on when the first symptoms appear.

  • Belladonna D12, an extract from belladonna, is used to combat fever.
  • Borax can help with virus-related mucous membrane changes.

It is mainly used for acute acne and herpes and for potency D6.

  • Lachesis D12 is especially effective against pain when the pain occurs relatively far back in the neck.
  • Lycopodium, which is extracted from a mossy plant, ensures better wound healing. Here it is above all the antibacterial effect of the aluminum ions present in it which ensures rapid healing.

With mouth rot there are many different home remedies, which are used for healing. Not all of them are suitable for the treatment of babies and small children because of their ingredients.

The medicinal plants chamomile and sage are particularly good, as they have a disinfecting and anti-inflammatory effect. A boiled tea bag should be placed on the sore spots for a few moments so that it can develop its effect locally. There are also tinctures of these two plants or tea tree oil, which are applied locally with a cotton swab to the affected areas.

Even though honey and sugar in the babies’ teas are otherwise rather forbidden in order not to cause caries, this additive can be very effective in this case. The honey has a strengthening effect on the immune system and can thus accelerate the healing process. Very much relief also brings cold in the form of ice cubes.

If these are given to the wounds, the pain improves and the little ones cry less. All other known household remedies are much more difficult to use, as they are applied in the form of mouthwashes. However, this form of application is not possible with babies, as they are more likely to be swallowed than spat out again.

Since mouth rot is a viral infection, no antibiotics are prescribed in this case. These drugs would have no effect here. Instead, an antiviral substance called Aciclovir helps at this point.

This drug can accelerate the healing process, but is not used in every case. The doctor will make an individual decision depending on the type of symptoms, the course of the illness and the baby’s general condition. However, if the course of the disease is severe, it should be started as early as possible.
