Therapy

The treatment of pain under the tongue depends on the cause. Teas, tinctures or gels with medicinal plant extracts are considered by some people to be beneficial for pain under the tongue. Examples of teas, tinctures or gels with medicinal plant extracts are lime blossom, camomile, mallow leaves, aloe vera or marshmallow roots.A sufficient fluid intake and avoiding spicy foods and irritants can provide relief.

A general strengthening of the immune system through a balanced diet and a balance between exercise and relaxation phases can additionally support the healing process. If necessary, anti-inflammatory and analgesic solutions that numb the oral mucosa, lozengesics and medication can be administered. In this case, however, the type and duration of application should be considered.

In the case of inflammation of the salivary glands and salivary stones, the underlying disease is treated first. The flow of saliva can be regulated by eating lemons, chewing gum and massaging the gland, for example. Larger salivary stones are sometimes crushed or surgically removed with the help of shock wave therapy.

During this operation, it may also be advisable to have the salivary gland duct concerned widened. Surgery is also advisable in the case of a frog tumor that does not empty spontaneously or recurs repeatedly. In case of a herpes infection, treatment is usually with acyclovir.

For other viral causes, good oral hygiene is generally advisable, at best with mild, well-tolerated substances without alcohol and preservatives. In case of bacterial causes, antibiotics are recommended, especially for immunocompromised people. Emergency medical treatment is required in the case of life-threatening angioedema in the context of an allergy.
