Tourette Syndrome: Medical History

The medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of Tourette syndrome. If the affected person is a child, the history should be directed to the parents.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your relatives?
  • Are there any hereditary diseases in your family?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What motor tics (movement disorders) do you/your child suffer from?
  • What vocal/linguistic tics (involuntary utterances, sounds, noises) have you or others observed in yourself/your child?
  • How many times a day do the respective tics occur?
  • Do stressful situations or even relaxation intensify your tics/your child’s tics?
  • Do you/can your child sense if a tic is imminent (premonition)?
  • Can you/can your child suppress tics?
  • Do you/your child self-harm (autoaggression)?
  • Do you/your child suffer from any other neurological or psychiatric conditions such as ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder?
