Treatment of slimy bowel movements

In many cases, mucous bowel movements do not need to be treated in the classical sense. Especially when certain foods or medications are responsible for the mucus in the bowel movement, it is sufficient to leave out these substances and not to consume them. If, on the other hand, pathogens are responsible for mucusy bowel movements, usually no more than a symptomatic therapy with sufficient fluid and a slow post-infection diet is necessary as treatment.

If necessary, the pathogens can be treated with medication. More serious diseases such as chronic inflammatory bowel diseases or diseases of the digestive organs (liver, gallbladder, pancreas) require a much more detailed therapy. For example, a blockage of the bile or pancreatic ducts often requires surgical treatment.

Also a medicinal substitution (addition) of digestive enzymes can help with digestive problems. In the case of chronic inflammation of the intestine, therapy with anti-inflammatory drugs may be necessary under certain circumstances. In more pronounced cases, active substances are also used to reduce the strong reaction of the immune system. If a tumor is responsible for the mucilaginous bowel movement, it is usually removed surgically, if necessary a special oncological therapy follows. Duration vs. prognosis of mucusy stool

The duration of the slimy bowel movement can range from a few days to years of recurring complaints and is highly dependent on the cause. Short-term illnesses or problems such as food changes, drug-induced mucous bowel movements and infectious diseases usually subside after a little more than a week. Chronic diseases of the digestive organs as well as chronic inflammatory bowel diseases can cause recurrent slimy bowel movements and must often be treated for life.

Food intolerances also usually last a lifetime. However, the symptoms can disappear completely by avoiding the food that causes them.
