Treatment/Therapy | Vomiting due to stress

Treatment/Therapy

Vomiting due to stress can be treated in different ways. For example, if it is a sudden bereavement or an important exam, the vomiting should stop again after the situation is over. However, frequent vomiting can also occur under permanent or recurrent stress.

This should be treated. It is important to relieve the stress or at least to create better strategies for coping with stress. Stress often occurs in situations that are perceived as unsolvable or overstraining.

It can be helpful to find strategies for solving such situations. If all this is not enough, professional help should be sought. A psychotherapeutic treatment can improve the handling of stress or help to solve conflicts.

Often a conversation with the family doctor can be a first step in this direction.

  • In the short term, drugs can help to relieve the nausea. However, this is not a causal treatment of the symptoms.
  • If a very current situation is the trigger of great stress, therapy may not be necessary.
  • Regular time-outs to prevent permanent stress are very important.
  • This includes clear agreements or precise work instructions if problems arise in everyday work.
  • It can also be useful to practice dealing with stress in certain situations. This includes, for example, progressive muscle relaxation.

Duration/Prediction

Since vomiting due to stress is highly dependent on the cause of the stress, its duration may vary. If it is an acute situation, such as an important exam, it is assumed that the vomiting will stop after the trigger has been overcome. If this is not the case, another cause could have triggered the vomiting.

However, stress can also last for a longer period of time and thus lead to vomiting again and again. In this case treatment should be carried out, possibly with psychotherapeutic support. If this does not happen, the vomiting may even worsen or further symptoms may occur.

It is also possible that such treatment will take a longer period of time. Usually the vomiting caused by stress disappears when the stress has been relieved or ways have been found to deal with the stress well.
