TreatmentTherapy | Spinal Muscular Atrophy – SMA

TreatmentTherapy

The treatment of spinal muscular atrophy is very difficult and complex, as a causal treatment is not possible. Therefore, the focus is mainly on improving and maintaining the previous muscular abilities. If pain occurs, it should be alleviated and possibly treated within the framework of a special pain therapy.

The greatest success of treatment is achieved by a combination of treatments from a wide range of disciplines. These include physiotherapy, speech therapy and pain therapy. Through physiotherapy, the muscles can be strengthened by means of specific exercises and the use of devices for nerve and muscle stimulation.

At the same time, an improvement in endurance is aimed at. Speech therapy promotes the learning of speech, especially in children, but adults also benefit from speech therapy exercises. The targeted use of the respiratory muscles as well as the chewing and swallowing muscles is also trained.

A pain therapy should be carried out as an accompanying form of therapy. In case of very severe pain, treatment with medication may be necessary. In addition, special breathing and relaxation exercises are taught, which can be used when pain arises.

All forms of treatment or therapies should be carried out regularly and consistently. Operations, especially in the area of the spine, can be useful to improve mobility. To support the patient in everyday life, aids such as orthopedic shoes, walking and standing aids, seating shells, wheelchairs or stair lifts can be used. If breathing difficulties occur, night-time ventilation can be used with the help of face masks (breathing masks). Which aids are useful for the patient must be decided in consultation with the attending physicians and therapists.

Prognosis

The spinal muscular atrophy is not curable. The prognosis depends on the type of the disease. The course of the disease can be slowed down and the quality of life improved by means of various forms of treatment. Currently, there are no effective drugs available, but drug treatment is still the subject of medical research.
