Tremor and alcohol

The effect of alcohol must be assessed according to whether there is a single case of high alcohol consumption or chronic alcohol abuse. With a one-time high alcohol consumption the function of the cerebellum is temporarily disturbed. Besides trembling, this results in a broad and unsteady gait and difficulties in executing movements precisely.

The tremor in drunkenness is the result of the disturbed coordination of movement through the cerebellum. The cells of the cerebellum are permanently destroyed by long-term alcohol abuse, probably in combination with the frequent malnutrition and undersupply of vitamins. However, as the body adjusts to the long-term consumption of alcohol, chronic alcohol addicts suffer milder symptoms than a one-time drunk over a long period of time. Only later do the severe consequences of cerebellar damage become apparent. Tremor can occur in alcohol addicts during alcohol withdrawal.

Duration

The duration of a tremor depends on the type of tremor. An essential tremor, for example, is characterized by the fact that in one second there are about 5-10 movements that occur mainly in the hands. In some types of tremor, the symptoms also occur only during certain movements.

In orthostatic tremor, for example, the twitching occurs mainly during prolonged standing. Accordingly, the duration of tremor depends on the time of standing. Depending on the effectiveness of the therapy, the duration of a tremor can sometimes be significantly shortened.

Prognosis

The prognosis of tremor usually includes that the tremor will accompany the affected person throughout his life. The tremor can be of varying severity. The prognosis in all cases depends on the type of tremor.

Some forms of tremor are severe from the onset and can only be influenced by various forms of therapy. Essential tremor, on the other hand, is slowly progressive, which means that the tremors are initially only occasional for a few minutes and become more frequent as the disease progresses.
