Trichloroacetic Acid

Products

Trichloroacetic acid is contained as a concentrated gel in Wartner pen for warts, among other products. It is a medical device. As a pure substance, trichloroacetic acid is also available in pharmacies. Specialty retailers can order it from specialized suppliers.

Structure and properties

Trichloroacetic acid (C2HCl3O2, Mr = 163.4 g/mol) is a trichloro derivative of acetic acid. It exists as a white crystalline mass or in the form of colorless and easily dissolved crystals. The acid is very soluble in water and has a faint pungent odor. Trichloroacetic acid (pKa 0.65) is more acidic than ordinary acetic acid (pKa 4.76) and salicylic acid (pKa 3.0).

Effects

Trichloroacetic acid has corrosive properties and dissolves the skin, under which healthy skin subsequently grows back. It dissolves warts faster and more effectively than salicylic acid, which is also found in some wart remedies.

Fields of application

In the form of suitable preparations for external treatment of common warts and plantar warts on the hands or feet.

Dosage

According to the package leaflet. The wart remedies are applied to the affected areas once or twice a day. They are administered only thinly, allowed to dry and must not get on healthy skin or other parts of the body!

Contraindications

Trichloroacetic acid is contraindicated in hypersensitivity, children under 4 years of age, and diabetics. Numerous precautions must be observed during use due to the highly corrosive properties of the active ingredient. Full details can be found in the drug label.

Interactions

No additional topical wart medications should be applied during treatment.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include a burning sensation, skin redness, itching, skin discoloration, and pain. If discomfort becomes too severe or healthy skin breaks down, the preparation can be washed off with soap and water.
