Vaccination against meningitis | Meningitis in the baby

Vaccination against meningitis

A baby can be vaccinated against several pathogens that cause meningitis. Since bacterial meningitis has a much more serious course, vaccination against possible bacterial pathogens is particularly indicated. Vaccinations against several bacterial strains already exist and are recommended by the STIKO (permanent vaccination commission).

Vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae type B can be carried out in the third, fourth, fifth and twelfth month of life. Vaccination against several different types of pneumococcus can be carried out between the ages of two months and five years. Vaccination against meningococcus (type C) can also be carried out in the second year of life.In addition, a vaccine against meningococcus (type B) has been available since 2013.

Based on studies and investigations carried out, the current data situation is not yet sufficient for a general vaccination recommendation by STIKO. Therefore, this vaccination is only recommended for babies with specific underlying diseases.
