Vitamin A Blache eye ointment is on the market in many countries. It has been approved since 1956.
Structure and properties
Retinol palmitate (C36H60O2, Mr = 524.86 g/mol) is the form of retinol (vitamin A) esterified with palmitic acid. It exists as a pale yellow, fatty mass or, in the molten state, as a yellow, oily liquid.
Effects
Vitamin A (ATC S01XA02) promotes the rebuilding of the epithelium of the conjunctiva and cornea. It is necessary for normal epithelial tissue function and glandular secretion. Retinyl esters stored in the tear fluid are hydrolyzed to retinol, which is released into the tear fluid.
Indications
For supportive treatment of vitamin A deficiency-related conditions of the cornea and conjunctiva, such as corneal opacity or dehydration of the eye. The ointment may also be used for injuries such as a burn or chemical burn of the conjunctiva and cornea.
Dosage
According to the professional information. The ointment is placed in the conjunctival sac of the eye two to four times daily. See also under Administering ophthalmic ointments.
Contraindications
Vitamin A eye ointment is contraindicated in hypersensitivity and vitamin A hypervitaminosis. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.
