Exercises on the machine | Spinal canal stenosis in the lumbar spine – back school

Exercises on the machine

In addition to the exercises described so far, equipment can also be used to strengthen and stabilize the back muscles.

  • Butterfly Reverse This exercise strengthens the muscles of the thoracic spine and the shoulder blades, this can support an upright posture and thus help with complaints caused by spinal canal stenosis. It is important to perform the exercise in a controlled and clean way.

The arms should only be moved so far back that the hands still remain in the field of vision. The burst maintains contact with the pad all the time.

  • Abdominal Press on the Roll There are devices that are designed to facilitate the performance of sit-ups to train the abdominal muscles. These can also be helpful for weak abdominal muscles in spinal canal stenosis to ensure improved posture.

The back should remain in constant contact with the floor during the exercise. The hands should only be placed loosely on the machine. The tension comes from the abdomen not from the arms.

  • Back straightener The back straightener is a device that trains the straightening muscles of the lower spine.

The patient goes into an extension of the spinal column. This can be uncomfortable in case of spinal canal stenosis. The extent of movement for the exercise should be discussed with a therapist.

This exercise can be helpful if it is performed properly and appropriately. However, special care should be taken with the back extensor.

  • Rowing Rowing is a good exercise to improve the upright position of the BWS and to improve the statics and thus the load on the lumbar spine. It is important to maintain an upright posture. The abdomen should be tense during the exercise and the trunk should be stabilized. The movement comes from the arms and the shoulder blades, which contract at the back during the exercise, as if you wanted to fix a 2 Euro piece between the shoulder blades.
