When should sulfonylureas not be taken ?
Sulfonylureas must not be taken in case of hypersensitivity to drugs of the sulfonamide type. These include antibiotics used for urinary tract infections (Cotrimoxazole). Some medicines for high blood pressure (diuretics) have a similar origin and have been discontinued by some people due to hypersensitivity.
Your doctor will talk to you directly about some of these medications to check your tolerance. Sulfonylureas should generally not be used for diseases of the liver, kidney and heart. However, you do not need to worry about possible organ deterioration because of the regular medical checks of your blood values.
Interactions
Blood pressure-lowering drugs such as beta-blockers (metoprolol, bisoprolol) or ACE inhibitors (enalapril, verapamil, captopril, ramipril, lisinopril) can increase the effect of sulonylureas. Hormone preparations and thyroid medication additionally influence the effect. However, there are no interactions that absolutely prohibit therapy with sulfonylureas. Your physician will discuss your medication scheme individually and determine a cost-benefit ratio for therapy with sulfonylureas.
