Wound and healing ointment: Types, application, risks

Wound and healing ointment containing dexpanthenol

Ointments containing the active ingredient dexpanthenol are frequent companions in the medicine cabinet. They promote the renewal of the skin layer and provide moisture. They are ideal for the so-called proliferative phase of wound healing, in which the wound slowly closes and crusts over. In addition to skin ointments containing dexpanthenol, there are also preparations that are especially suitable for the nasal mucosa or the eyes.

Wound and healing ointment with zinc

Zinc paste, which was frequently used in the past, promotes the cross-linking of fibrin and the production of collagen. These are substances that are important for wound healing. The disadvantage of zinc ointments is that they dry out the wound. This effect is only desirable for heavily weeping wounds, so zinc paste is mainly used here. Keep in mind that a paste containing zinc is not an ointment for open wounds.

Disinfecting ointments and antibiotics

If a wound is infected with bacteria, the doctor may use wound ointments with antibiotics. The active ingredients kill the germs, thus preventing the infection from spreading and indirectly promoting wound healing. Caution: Despite the use of an antibiotic ointment, the wound must still be kept clean!

Wound and healing ointment with hyaluron

Wound and healing ointments with hyaluron can accelerate the healing process of chronic wounds. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to bind a lot of liquid and thus ensures that the wound remains moist. In a moist environment, the skin can regenerate more quickly, and it is also protected from chafing, rubbing and drying out. However, it is important to clean and disinfect the wound beforehand and cover it with a sterile dressing after applying the hyaluronic ointment.

Scar ointment – what is it?

After an injury, many patients are concerned that an unaesthetic and sometimes painful scar will develop. So-called silicone-containing scar ointments can be bought in pharmacies, which are supposed to soften the tissue and prevent the scar from getting out of hand. They are applied to the scar several times a day once the wound has healed and is free of crusts.

When should you not use wound and healing ointment?

You should avoid applying wound and healing ointment directly to open wounds. The viscous wound ointment would close the injury so that wound secretions could no longer flow off.
