Zinc pyrithione is commercially available as a shampoo (Squa-med). It has been approved as a drug in many countries since 1980. In addition, cosmetics and medical products containing the active ingredient are also available.
Structure and properties
Zinc pyrithione (C10H8N2O2S2Zn, Mr = 317.7 g/mol) is structurally related to dipyrithione.
Effects
Zinc pyrithione (ATC D11AC08) has keratostatic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties and inhibits dandruff regardless of cause.
Indications
- Seborrheic eczema of the scalp
- Dandruff of the head
- Psoriasis of the hairy head
- Pityriasis versicolor
Dosage
According to the package leaflet. The shampoo is applied 1-2 times a week.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- The shampoo should not get into the eyes.
