Ignition | Labial frenulum

Ignition

If a labial frenulum is inflamed, this often first becomes noticeable in the form of pain, which can persist when speaking or eating, but also at rest. Furthermore, an inflamed labial frenulum can also be slightly reddened and swollen. The inflammation can affect different parts of the labial frenulum more, for example at the transition to the lip or gums.

As a cause germs can come into question, which could enter the lip frenulum over tears in the oral mucosa or however in the context of an improper stinging of a piercing. Also an inflammation of the gums can sometimes spread to the labial frenulum. An antibacterial mouth rinse can help against an inflamed labial frenulum. If the symptoms do not improve, a visit to the dentist is highly recommended.

Shortening the labial frenulum

Shortening the labial frenulum means cutting through the structure that causes problems in this case, which is stretched between the upper and lower jaw and the lip in the oral vestibule. The shortening is done by the dentist and can be done either with a scalpel or a laser. It is usually necessary if it is designed in such a way that it leads to a gap in the incisors or to a receding gum. The shortening is only performed after the outer incisors have erupted. Therapeutic shortening of the labial frenulum may still be possible and helpful later on.

Piercing with costs

The piercing through the labial frenulum belongs to the rather complication-free piercings, because the oral mucosa heals fast. Usually the wound healing takes about two weeks. In this time one should pay attention to an adequate oral hygiene and regularly disinfect the place of the piercing at the labial frenulum.

The costs of the piercing, that is stung by trained specialists, is on average 40 to 50 Euro, whereby this can include different services, like jewelry, depending on the piercing studio, or is charged extra. But before you let a piercing sting at the lip frenulum you should first of all look for a suitable piercing studio with adequate hygienic standard and trained specialists. Then you should also discuss the costs.Usually the first jewelry is included in the price.

As jewelry is often a ring, which is closed with a ball is chosen, because this is also visible as desired when smiling. When making jewelry, you should make sure that the ring has the right thickness and diameter and that the ball does not touch the incisors. In addition the piercing can leave pressure marks on the gums, so it should be checked regularly.

The labial frenulum can cause problems in some cases if it is placed too close to the space between the middle incisors. For example, it can cause a gap between the teeth or cause the gums to recede. If it is not treated in time, it can cause further problems later on, which can be caused by the malposition of the teeth or the shrinking of the gums.

In addition, the labial frenulum can tear in the context of an injury, but usually leaves no permanent damage except for a small wound, which heals quite quickly. Instead of tearing, a bruise can also develop on the labial frenulum, which recedes during the course of wound healing. In addition, the frenulum may be inflamed and then cause pain when speaking, eating and other movements of the lips.

In addition, it is often reddened and swollen when it becomes inflamed. The cause for the partial or complete tearing of the labial frenulum is usually a fall or a blow on the mouth, so that shear forces arise, which tighten the labial frenulum so that it finally tears. Inflammation of the labial frenulum is usually caused by a germ being carried into the oral mucosa.

This can happen either through tears in the mucous membrane or as a result of a piercing through the labial frenulum. The reason for the formation of a tooth gap between the frontal incisors or the receding gums is most likely to be the too deep base of the upper jaw, i.e. it is too close to the interdental space. On the one hand, this gives it a relatively strong pull on the gums.

On the other hand, in this case the labial frenulum acts like a wedge between the two incisors. Dental examination of the gums and teeth in general, and the frenulum and vestibule between the lips and teeth in particular, is used for diagnostic purposes. In the course of this examination, the integrity of the labial frenulum, the position of the gums and the position of the incisors are taken into consideration.

If a gap in the incisors or damage to the gums is foreseeable when the frenulum is deep, the frenulum can be cut by a dentist. This can be done relatively early to avoid the consequences, but it can also be successful later. In case of inflammation, special antiseptic mouth rinses and mouth ointments can be used.

Depending on the severity of the inflammation, systemic antibiotic therapy may also be necessary. If the labial frenulum is injured, the wound is usually treated only to stop the bleeding, keep the wound clean and control the healing process. Sewing the labial frenulum together is not carried out, as this does not bring any additional benefit to the affected person.

Injuries to the labial frenulum usually heal without complications and relatively quickly. Even after shortening the labial frenulum, wound healing is usually without problems. To counteract malpositioning of the teeth, it is indicated to cut the frenulum for prophylaxis.
