Medication for a slipped disc in pregnancy

Especially during pregnancy, the risk of suffering a herniated disc is higher, because during pregnancy the ligaments and joints become softer. Due to hormonal changes, more water is stored in the intervertebral discs during pregnancy, which makes the discs more unstable and makes it easier for them to jump out of their anchors. During pregnancy, many medications are contraindicated and should be avoided.

Especially operations are a danger for the unborn child. Therefore, alternative treatment options such as acupuncture, heat therapy and physiotherapy are often chosen during pregnancy. Acupuncture in particular often provides pregnant women with strong pain relief.

The painkillers of choice during pregnancy are paracetamol and ibuprofen. They can be taken as far as possible without risk until the 28th week of pregnancy. After the 28th week of pregnancy there is a risk of negative effects on the cardiovascular system of the unborn child in the case of ibuprofen.

Aspirin can also be used to treat pain. However, this too is only possible up to the 28th week of pregnancy due to possible effects on the cardiovascular system. The doctor often prescribes lower doses than usual.

Aspirin is the second choice for painkillers during pregnancy. Taking paracetamol is not considered dangerous, but one should stick to the recommended dosages and take the drug only occasionally if there is an existing painful indication. If followed, it is usually the first choice for treating pain and fever.

Compared to other painkillers, paracetamol can also be used to treat pain in the last trimester of pregnancy, after the 28th week of pregnancy. In general, NSAIDs (including aspirin and ibuprofen) should be avoided in the last trimester of pregnancy.
