Tobacco Dependence: Prevention

To prevent the mental and behavioral disorders caused by tobacco, attention must be paid to reducing risk factors.

Behavioral risk factors that may trigger tobacco use:

  • Psycho-social situation
    • Curiosity
    • Stress
    • Social reinforcement such as integration into groups

Secondary prevention

  • Pulmonary function: increased consumption of fruit (apples and bananas) and tomatoes was associated with a slower decline in expiratory one-second capacity (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC): per tercile of intake, an increase by
    • 3.59 ml/year smaller decrease in FEV1 value
    • 3.69 ml/year lower drop in FVC

    The greatest benefit was obtained in ex-smokers.
