Chloroacetic acid is commercially available as a solution for external use (acetocaustine). It has been approved in many countries since 1984.
Structure and properties
Chloroacetic acid (C2H3ClO2, Mr = 94.5 g/mol) is a chlorinated acetic acid derivative. It exists as colorless crystals with a pungent odor that are readily soluble in water.
Effects
Chloroacetic acid (ATC D11AF) is highly corrosive and dissolves the skin.
Indications
For the external treatment of warts.
Dosage
Carefully follow the instructions in the package leaflet. The healthy skin should not come into contact with the agent. The duration of treatment is usually four to six days.
Contraindications
Chloroacetic acid is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. It should not be used on the face, genital area, eyes, mucous membranes, wounds, moles, and age warts. For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Interactions
Interactions with other drugs are not known.
Adverse effects
The most common possible adverse effects include local reactions such as skin irritation, burning, and redness. Other side effects include severe scarring and hypersensitivity reactions.
