Products
In many countries, no drugs containing sulbactam are commercially available. In other countries, injectables and tablets are available, usually as a fixed combination with the penicillin ampicillin.
Structure and properties
Sulbactam (C8H11NO5S, Mr = 233.2 g/mol) is present in drugs as sulbactam sodium. It is a penicillanic acid sulfone.
Effects
Sulbactam (ATC J01CG01) is an inhibitor of beta-lactamases. These bacterial enzymes are responsible for resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics. Resistance can be overcome by combining an antibiotic with a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Sulbactam is hardly antibacterial on its own. It has a half-life of 1 to 2 hours.
Indications
For treatment of bacterial infectious diseases in combination with a beta-lactam antibiotic.
Dosage
According to the professional information leaflet.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity
- Monotherapy with sulbactam
For complete precautions, see the drug label.
Interactions
Probenecid inhibits tubular secretion of sulbactam. As a result, plasma concentrations increase and elimination is delayed.
Adverse effects
Adverse effects are usually due to the added antibiotic and include gastrointestinal discomfort, skin rashes, and allergic reactions.
