Definition
An itchy glans affects many men of different ages. The symptom can occur once or permanently, often accompanied by other symptoms. The causes can vary and there is not always a need for treatment. For a diagnosis it is important whether the itching is permanent or occurs, for example, when urinating and whether it is related to past intercourse. If this is the case, the sexual partner should be informed if possible so that a diagnosis and treatment can be made for both parties.
Causes
Itching of the glans is a symptom that occurs in various clinical pictures. So also with eczema of the glans. In many cases, the itching is also accompanied by other symptoms.
A pain, swelling, redness and a weeping glans can all indicate an inflammation of the glans. Inflammation of the glans, also called “balanitis”, can be caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and parasites, but above all by fungi. Such pathogen-related infections are not always attributable to a single cause.
However, the most common infections are caused by lack of hygiene or are transmitted during sexual intercourse. Itching on the glans can also occur as a result of an allergic reaction. Some men have contact allergies to certain substances contained in some underwear.
Latex allergies, which can cause problems when using condoms containing latex, are also possible. As a result, a rash develops which can be accompanied by severe itching of the glans. Contact with the triggering material should be avoided from now on, the allergic reaction usually disappears by itself.
However, if an extremely strong redness or swelling should occur, a doctor must be consulted. It is also conceivable that the itching only indicates an irritation. This is possible after sexual intercourse, but the glans can also be irritated by wearing the wrong or too tight underwear. Once the cause has been eliminated, the itching should subside of its own accord in this case.
