Aftercare of the hallux rigidus
As mentioned above, the postoperative treatment of a Hallux Rigidus differs depending on the surgical procedure. Except for cheilectomy, a shoe with a rigid sole must always be worn first to allow the bone to make a stable connection. The main purpose of this is to prevent a rolling load in the freshly operated joint.
This means that a load on the heel is definitely allowed. Despite the shoe, movement therapy should be started as soon as possible after the operation. Of course, this is especially important if a joint replacement has been implanted.
Especially in the period shortly after the operation it is also important to take sufficient painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs to support the healing process and prevent the development of chronic pain. Ibuprofen or Diclofenac, for example, are suitable for this purpose. These effects can be supported by elevation, cooling and lymph drainage, especially in the first days after the operation.
Walking and mobility can be improved very well with the help of movement exercises. However, one should not expect the range of motion of a healthy joint.
