Angelica: Effect and Side Effects

Few studies have been done on pharmacology, but angelica root has been found to lower calcium concentrations in smooth muscle by blocking certain transporters.

Smooth muscle is present in the tissues of the entire gastrointestinal tract, among others, where it is responsible for the onward transport of food. The reduced calcium content in the muscle cells makes them slacken, which is perceived as an antispasmodic effect.

The plant also promotes the flow of digestive juices. In addition, sedative and analgesic effects of angelica root have also been described.

Angelica root side effects

Angelica root contains furanocoumarins, which make the skin sensitive to light. Exposure to UV light can thus lead to skin inflammation (photodermatoses) and allergic reactions, which is why prolonged sunbathing should be avoided for the duration of angelica root intake. Furanocoumarins may also be carcinogenic in combination with UV-A rays.

Currently, there are no known interactions with other agents.
