Sevoflurane

Products

Sevoflurane is commercially available as a liquid (Sevorane, generic). It has been approved in many countries since 1995.

Structure and properties

Sevoflurane (C4H3F7O, Mr = 200.1 g/mol) exists as a clear, colorless, and volatile liquid with a mild, ether-like odor that is sparingly soluble in water. It is an ether that is fluorinated seven times. The boiling point is about 59 °C. Sevoflurane is not flammable. The drug does not contain any excipients. It is composed of pure sevoflurane.

Effects

Sevoflurane (ATC N01AB08) has anesthetic properties and rapidly causes loss of consciousness after administration. After discontinuation, consciousness returns rapidly. The effects are attributed to interaction with neurotransmitter receptors and ion channels.

Indications

For induction and maintenance of general anesthesia during inpatient or outpatient surgical procedures.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The drug is administered to a calibrated vaporizer and inhaled.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity, including to other halogenated inhalation anesthetics.
  • Predisposition to malignant hyperthermia

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include drowsiness, low blood pressure, cough, and nausea and vomiting.
